Don Balke’s watercolor and oil paintings are inspired by his love of the natural world and his travels across the United States, Canada, Australia, and Africa. He takes the animals and landscapes he has seen, and brings the splendid colors of nature into his paintings. The depth, clarity, and detail he obtains with watercolor contributes to the vitality of his distinctive style. While realism and authenticity are an integral part of his watercolor paintings, they are much more than animal studies. Getting up close to a Balke painting is like getting up close to the creature itself in its own environment. A frequent comment is that they' are "real enough to touch."
Don’s professional art career began 60 years ago, when he attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. But his talent for art began when he was a boy, the youngest of ten children, growing up on a Wisconsin backwoods farm. He could not help but become very aware of the environment that supplied the family’s daily needs and the wildlife that surrounded them. Don captures the timeless language of nature in his paintings, and feels well-rewarded in knowing that others are enjoying his work with him.
Don and his family moved to the North Carolina mountains and built the art gallery on their land over thirty years ago. To celebrate the 60 years of artwork, the gallery is having an unprecedented sale. All framed reproductions are discounted 40% to 70% off. So, come out and meet the artist this fall.
